Close leaking valves: Varicose veins are a result of malfunctioning valves usually in the saphenous system. The first step in treatment would be to obtain a venous reflux ultrasound to make the diagnosis and help plan treatment which could  be laser or radiofreqency closure of the valves usually with microphlebectomies and possible sclerotherapy or ultrasound directed sclerotherapy. You should see a vein specialist.

Probably not.: Varicose veins are large, bulging grape-like veins while blue veins which are not large, bulging or grape-like are usually reticular or feeding veins.  These blue veins are essentially the veins between the small spider veins and the larger varicose veins.You should see a vein specialist for an evaluation.

Venous insufficinecy: Visible veins on the legs are usually the result of venous insufficiency. The insufficiency may be in the skin [resulting tiny spider veins], or below the surface of the skin [ causing tiny and varicose veins] or in deep veins. It is best to have this evaluated by a vein specialist, often with aid of an ultrasound to see how best to treat. Weight loss or fat loss also makes veins more visible.

Varicosities: No, definitely not. These are called varicosities and they shouldn't cause any problems unless they are very disfiguring and causing psychological stress to the teenager.

Yes: Some people have very visible veins while others have deeper, less obvious ones. The latter group are more difficult to insert iv's or draw blood specimens from.

Multiple reasons: Veins return blood back to the heart and  can carry a large volume of blood.  Depending on many factors including levels of hydration,  genetics, outside temperature and even physical activity, the size of the veins will vary.  Another important function of the veins is to help control body temperature and this too will affect vein size.  Bulging veins, however, are not normal. See a vein specialist.

: Have your doctor check for varicose veins.  Pain or sensitivity could be signs of thrombophlebitis, but this would be acute  or subacute, not chronic.  Ask your doctor about this disorder potential.

See MD: Those signs and symptoms by themselves are fairly nonspecific. Even when when they occur together they do not point to a single diagnosis.

See doctor: To be sure, you need an ultrasound of the leg which is non-invasive and fairly quick.  Some of the signs of a clot are if it's warm, red, or swollen.
