my son is 4yrs old . has coxasockie virus .. with bad blisters on his feet and hands ... screaming and crying from the itching.. what do you recommend?

Hand Foot and Mouth: Give him claritin syrup 2tsp once daily and you can rub some aquaphor or aveeno (oatmeal) lotion directly on to the blisters. Not a good idea to use a cortisone cream since it is a virus the body is attacking and no treatment for it.

Hand foot mouth: Agree with your baby's doctor that blisters will heal on its own.  No need to put anything on the blisters.

Avoid scratching: Oatmeal baths are soothing and keeping his nails trim helps to avoid opening the blisters. Wearing socks or mittens at night is another approach. 
The lesions should heal over the next two weeks. Watch for signs of oozing, redness and swelling. Please follow up with your Pediatrician.

Texas criteria: The Texas Department of Health Care Services publishes criteria for day care exclusion due to a variety of illnesses. It provides that the duration of fever is the only period for exclusion. This is considered a rather minor affliction &amp; usually occurs in young kids. Actual spread via respiratory or oral secretions may be 1-3 weeks. Private day cares may have their own criteria.

Blisters: Anytime there is blistering on the hands that cannot be explained by trauma, it is a good idea to see your physician.  There are numerous potential causes for what you have described.  It should be formally evaluated by either your physician or a dermatologist directly.

Yes: Although hfm is most often associated with coxsackievirus a16, the process does occur with other enteroviral strains (enterovirus 71 & others). A child will develop immunity to an individual strain after an illness but be susceptible to other unrelated strains, much like there are different strains that cause the flu.

HFMD: Caused by viruses of the picornaviridae family. The most common are coxsackie virus a16 and enterovirus 71 as well as by strains of coxsackievirus or enterovirus. Hfmd is common and highly contagious and typically causes a mild, self-limited febrile illness followed by a maculopapular rash that may involve the skin of hands, feet and oral cavity. Usually in children it can also infect adults.
