Accepted Answer

Could be: Can get a viral urticaria - i n which case it will settle as the virus goes .  However also could be physical or allergic.  Worth another doctor examination or perhaps even a virtual consult  to check out the rash and recheck chest etc.  Should seek urgent attention if worsening breathing or if vomiting

my son is 5 and had bronchitis. he was on pred and breathing tx. bronchitis is better but he is on day 4 of hives.viral? how many days will they last?

Until treated: It is hard to map out the the course of the hives which are usually a skins reaction to an allergen.  Did he start having hives with the addition of the breathing treatment.  Prednisone usually with help to improve hives but if he is still encountering the agent which is causing the hives they will continue to occur.  Seek medical treatment and try an antihistamine

how long should i expect my post viral rash to keep breaking me out into random hives?

No way to know.: My standard answer to that question is, "my crystal ball is in the shop." urticarial eruptions can persist for days to weeks after the virus is gone; how long is totally unpredictable. A long-acting antihistamine such as fexofenadine (now available otc) can be very helpful until the reaction subsides.

Yes: Viral infections (epstein-barr virus, hepatitis virus, herpes virus), bacterial infections (strep throat, staph), fungal infections, respiratory infections, urinary and gastrointestinal infections can all cause hives. They do not cause hives directly but indirectly by causing inflammation from stimulating the body's defense mechanisms.

Many types: Infection with viruses, bacteria, fungus, yeast, mycoplasma, parasites can all cause hives. Viruses include epstein-barr (mono), hepatitis, hiv, herpes, gastrointestinal, respiratory, genitourinary viruses. The hives usually resolve after the infection clears. Some viruses have no cure--they can be in remission but them flare again.

Sore throat: Be wary of abx for unconfirmed strep throat.  80% of sore throats are viral.  A culture should have been obtained.  And given the protracted symptoms and cough, your child likely had a viral illness or concurrent strep with a viral infection.  The hives, though, warrant another investigation.

Zika? Dengue?: It should clear soon, but there's nothing to speed it. The main thing is to avoid pregnancy for the next few weeks or months, in case you have Zika virus; or discuss with your doctor immediately if you are pregnant now. Use condoms for sex for a while; Zika can be transmitted sexually (so far only male to female, but might go the other way; better safe than sorry). Ask doctor about Zika testing.

Rash with a virus: It is common, especially with children, to get a rash with certain viruses. The rash tends to get better in a few days. Treatment of an itchy rash can be with antihistamines. I prefer the long-acting, non-sedating antihistamines like ceterezine (Zyrtec) or loratadine (Claritin) in kids, which is taken once a day. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can be used every 4 to 6 hours, but it makes you sleepy.

Could be either: Severe hives and congestion after eating ham...could be due to food, but you describe it occurring 2 hours after eating, which is a bit late for a food related allergic reaction. Are you sick currently? Hives and congestion could certainly be related to a viral infection as well.
