Panic and GYN exam: This may be a specific phobia or a more generalized condition.  In any case, please see a clinical psychologist for diagnosis and treatment.  One treatment is systematic desensitization.  Another modality is clinical hypnosis w/self-hypnosis training (www.asch.net).  Share your fears w/a trusted friend or relative who has had a GYN exam. History & Physical?: The exam for birth control can be varied. In part, it depends on your age. If younger than 21, no internal exam is usually needed or performed. This is a relatively new experience and some providers or physicians may continue to examine. It does not seem as though it is helpful in the absence of symptoms.  Pap smears start at 21 and should be performed before birth control is distributed.

Concerned Gay Doctor: I hope you won't mind, but arousal during an examination of one's private sensitive parts is normal and common.  There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed or concerned with. Believe me this happens to many patients at 'inconvenient' times.  Your physician will have some experience with this and i would hope continue with you in a very gentle and professional way. But, the message is you are fine.

im a vigin , and i will go to a gyn exam soon , mom says its time , im 22, what should i expect? will the speculum break my hymen? will it hurt?

If you are a virgin: U do not need a speculum exam unless you are having a problem, like an abnormal discharge, if u have period problems your gyn can do an abdominal ultrasound to check the uterus and ovaries, if you want, the gyn can do a minor surgical procedure to open your hymen so it will not hurt or bleed the 1st time you have intercourse whenever that will be.

Trust the test: Home pregnancy tests are very accurate. They are the same tests used in a doctors office. They can detect a pregnancy 7-10 days after conception. The best time to take one is when you miss your period.  If you doubt the result you can repeat it in 1-2 days. If you were pregnant the hormone level would rise enough for detection.
