Reticular veins: The green veins in your legs are called reticular veins.  They are veins that are bigger than spider veins but smaller than varicose veins.  They are green because of where they are--just below the surface of the skin. Veins that are in the skin or on top of the skin are purple and red.  Usually reticular veins are flat and smooth but if they are bulgy and bumpy they are becoming varicose veins.

Some causes include hereditary, pregnancy, trauma and aging.  The gold standard of treatment is to have a venous reflux ultrasound to both diagnose and form a treatment plan.  You should see a vein specialist.

Inflammation: When veins throb, it is usually when someone is standing and the veins are inflamed.  Typically, lying down at night makes them feel better.  If your vein isn't doing that, you should be a doctor and get it checked out.

The lungs: Thromboembolism means that some or all of a clot that formed (usually in the leg) has broken off and traveled.  Generally when this occurs, it will end up in the lungs.  We call this a pulmonary embolism.  This can be a life threatening situation and needs to be treated emergently.

Venous insufficinecy: Visible veins on the legs are usually the result of venous insufficiency. The insufficiency may be in the skin [resulting tiny spider veins], or below the surface of the skin [ causing tiny and varicose veins] or in deep veins. It is best to have this evaluated by a vein specialist, often with aid of an ultrasound to see how best to treat. Weight loss or fat loss also makes veins more visible.

Have it checked: If a vein is painful, it may be inflamed - which can be associated with a clot within the vein - known as thrombophlebitis. If it is on the surface of the skin then it could be a superficial thrombophlebitis - less worrisome than a deep vein clot, but can be associated with deep vein clots. Sometimes veins are  inflamed because they are varicose. A vein specialist will help figure out the issue.

Yes: There is no reason to suffer with pain.There are so many good minimally invasive procedures available to treat the problem.

See vascular surgeon: Difficult to give you a complete answer without examination of your legs. Vascular surgeon would be the best person to see and treat you. Have an ultrasound first to examine for vein reflux. Most common therapy is vein ablation through an IV in the vein in the doctors office, followed by possible sclerotherapy or phlebectomies. Results usually great and disccomfort minimal. See vein specialist.
