Could be either: Technically, phlebothrombosis means a blood clot in a vein without inflammation.  It is a term that we don't see being used very often these days.  Thrombophlebitis means inflammation of a vein with a clot.  Generally, when one gets a dvt, a clot forms that causes the vein to become inflamed and painful. If a DVT occurs that isn't painful, it is more likely to be a phlebothrombosis.  Clear as mud?

Essentially the same: Thrombophlebitis is a clot with inflammation and phlebothrombosis is a clot without inflammation.  A DVT is usually always thrombophletbitis because of the associated inflammation and swelling of the area.  An example  of a phlebothrombosis would be a clotted hemorrhoid or a clot in an arm vein following an IV medication.

Many factors: Patients with a hereditary condition, called venous insufficiency have a valvular condition that allows blood to pool while standing or sitting, decreased return to heart when not lying down. Can lead to inflammation due to decreased blood flow through the vein, damage to vein and blood clotting.  Other factors blood clotting disorder, malignancy, recent surgery, hx dvt, pregnancy, hrt, infection.

Many things: Risk factors for deep vein thrombosis are numerous. One of the  most common is immobility. This can be caused by other medical problems, surgery, or other issues. Certain surgeries are higher risk than others. For example, orthopedic and bariatric surgery. Traveling long distances in cars or airplanes are another cause of immobility. Underlying malignancy or hypercoag state can also cause dvt.

Stasis occurs with long trips or immobility due to illness or casts. Injuries to the vein wall can occur with trauma from something within the vein or external to it. Hypercoagulable- increased risk of clotting -genetic/acquired.

Given the  proper conditions children  ill with prolonged immobility,  if they have indwelling ivs  (cvl),  if they have certain genetic tendencies clots may  occur.   If  a  child  has a chronic condition like heart disease, cancer ,  consult  the md about  the specific risks  and preventions.

Pain and swelling: The most common symptom of DVT is pain and the most common physical finding is swelling.  However, not everyone has these.  If you have unexplained swelling with or without calf or thigh pain then a venous ultrasound would be indicated to look for a dvt.  Sometimes even a ct scan or mrv is necessary.  The bottom line is, if DVT is considered, then proper testing is required.
