too little sodium? started eating low fat raw vegan and wondering if my sodium levels will drop too low. consume around 100-150mg a day.

MAY NEED MORE SODIUM: In a nov. 22, 2011 jama article: a mcmaster university study suggests that both high and low levels of salt intake may put people with heart disease or diabetes at increased risk of cardiovascular complications. Their study is the first to report a j-shaped association between sodium intake and cardiovascular disease. The study is interesting because too little sodium intake may be harmful!-wow.

could this be caused by sodium? i recently changed my diet to veganism and find the foods and some meals are higher in sodium. when i had rice cakes recently it became worse. same when i had marmite on a slice of vegan bread

Probably not: If you did not grow up in a vegan family one of your main risks of adopting that lifestyle is vitamin deficiency Lack of B12 found in meats among other things can cause a variety of problems including some mentioned. I would visit your doc who may check levels. I would also consult a clinical nutritionist to learn how to get your needed nutrients as a vegan.

my doctor said my high bp was genetic. exercise, sodium and dash diet didn't work, but vegan did. meat, dairy must be culprit.  i think i hit jackpot.?

Yes: Some people do well on more of a vegan / vegetarian diet. You probably were low on magnesium and the diet change helped that.

i heard lemon juice in water helps the liver.  i have bottled lemon juice that contains some sodium bisulfite and sodium benzoate.  is this ok to use?

Lemon juice: I am not aware of the fact of lemon juice helping the liver. There are tons of claims made but not a signle one substantiated.

Accepted Answer

It varies: People with congestive heart failure, or hypertension, chronic kidney disease need to be on a low sodium diet, usually 4000 mg or less per day. Other folks need not be so restiricted. High na intake may be required in some heavy perspiration situations. (gatoraid) so that a "safe' dose is not the same for everyone.  In what context is your question framed.?

Good habits start: early. Your body can currently compensate for a high sodium diet but its not something you want to keep up. Everything should be in moderation. But, the fact that you took the time to ask this question means that you are thinking about what you eat which will serve you well. Good luck.

Leaky gut : Vegans are predisposed to leaky gut syndrome which is linked to interstitial cystitis. Include something from each of the amino acid rich plant groups ( vegetables , legumes , grains , and nuts and seeds ) in your vegan diet.

Increase protein: Many vegetarians and vegans that i know replace meat with starches.  It is still important to include a good source of protein into your diet.  Don't replace you protein calories with additional carbs.  Also cutting out all sources of sugar will help tremendously.  This is not easy.  Many processed foods contain added sugars.

Lots of choices.: Medications might include Carbamazepine (like trileptal), neuron tin, lyrica, (pregabalin) baclofen, cymbalta, but also maybe, lamotrigine, tricyclic antidepressants.  Better yet might be a needle directed balloon decompression of the exit foramen in the skull.  Your neurologist can assist in redirecting your therapy.

i'm trying to reduce sodium intake. i read that 1 cup serving with 100mg sodium is less than 6oz with 60mg. why? how do i know what's lower?

It is not less.: The milligrams are as printed.  Perhaps the serving size of the 6oz was two (2) 6oz portions (which would make it 120mg which IS greater than 100mg.)
