is it more effective to use bio oil or vaseline for scars?

No clear difference: Several topical products claim to benefit scars. Onion extract gel and petrolatum (vaseline and aquaphor) may have a small beneficial effect and are equally effective. I am not aware of any studies comparing bio oil (mineral oil, fragrance, vitamins, retinoid) and vaseline. Silicone gel sheeting benefits keloid scars and the pulse-dye-laser helps a variety of scars  when treated early (1-3 months).

had mohs surgery on my face, dr says to use vaseline only, im 3 weeks out from the surgery and im concerned about the thick red scar and if theres anything else i could use to promote healing. thank you! ?

Time to see same doc: Specifically postsurgical conditions have to be addressed with the doc who performed surgery. Never use creams or ointments found on internet or recommended by friends or relatives. Facial skin is extremely delicate and the less topicals are used, the better chances for recovery.

Probably not: Keeping healing skin hydrated and healthy is the best solution to reducing scarring. Scarring is a physiologic reaction that is more intrinsic than extrinsically controlled.

Vaseline is good: Vaseline is a good dressing for scars. When compared in controlled trials head-to-head with mederma, vaseline was significantly better.

hi. i had alarplasty last march. one side hasn't fully healed. it's been 36 days. i have been using vaseline (to prevent scarring). it has formed a little scab so i can not use scar gels yet? shall i continue using vaseline or just leave it alone?

: Have you asked the operating surgeon this question?  I recommend not using Vaseline at this time and instead would recommend applying aquaphor,a moisturizing agent.

Improve, not remove.: Scars cannot be removed but there is a large variety of techniques to improve their appearance, both surgical and non-surgical. They also improve with time. See a dermatologist or board-certified plastic surgeon to evaluate your options.

my skin is red from benzoyl peroxide i have stopped its use can i apply baby powder to my face, i am applying vaseline twice a day on the red scars?

No: Use an oil-free moisturizer, something that won't clog up your pores more. Using Vaseline or baby powder is not recommended. Use a good sunscreen, at least 15 SPF. I usually recommend a facial moisturizer that contains a sunscreen so it won't feel greasy. 
You may want to try a lower strength benzoyl peroxide for your acne or ask your doctor for a different medication.

what should i put after removing moles(surgical removal) from my face for less scars ... ? can i put aloe vera or vaseline ? or a specific kind of oil or cream?

Accepted Answer

No but may lessen it: The degree of scarring depends mostly on the severity of the cut. The more deep and ragged the worse the scar will be.
