Somewhat: Major surgery has a small risk from general anesthesia alone.  It is safe most of the time, or we wouldn't do it.  What you have is not clear, which is why you are having the surgery. Hopefully the surgery corrects the problem and all is well, but it depends on what is causing the problem. After the surgery you will know what caused it and what the next steps will be. Needs evaluation: Vaginal bleeding in a post menopausal woman is always abnormal and almost always needs and evaluation. Even if the person in question is so debilitated or frail that no exam or surgical intervention would be considered a blood test for severe anemia would usually be  in order. A gyn exam would be the place to start. Along with the blood tests those results would determine the next steps.

: Cancer would be near the bottom of my list for abnormal vaginal bleeding. It does happen, bur there are many other conditions that produce this symptom &amp; most are simple &amp; treatable. It is good to be concerned but more helpful if you are supportive. She needs your patience/support &amp; possibly extra help doing chores until she gets this sorted out.

my 11 year old had a pelvic us that found a 11cm x 7cm x 11cm ovarian mass. report states complex cystic and solid mass with internal septation and a solid component. solid component approx 4.4cm w/ surface nodularity. should i assume cancer?

Mass: There are several causes for ovarian masses including benign (not cancer) and malignant (cancerous). Blood work called tumor markers can sometimes help your doctors clinical suspicion but the only definitive way to diagnose is to remove the mass and have the pathologist review the specimen. You may be referred to pediatric gynecologist or oncologist.
