i have copd and my doctor gave me an antihistamine but said i was really dehydrated, will the antihistamines make my dehydration worse?

Not particularly : Dehydration occurs when you take in less fluid than your body burns off. Antihistamines can thicken your secretions but do nothing to your overall fluid balance.

Antihistamine  dry up mucus which  make getting rid of it difficult   But if  is there is lots of nasal congestion &amp; post nasal drip interfering with sleep it may be helpful . Also elevate head of bed to help with drainage and improve breathing. If there is HTN check for pseudoehprine/ phenylepherine which elevate BP f/u/doc

It is safe: It is safe to use an antihistamine with the inhaled steroid. Occasional use of a rescue inhaler is safe. If you are needing it on a more frequent basis then check with your doctor. Allergy symptoms often times respond to Benadryl (diphenhydramine) which may help your lung condition also. Check with your doctor if you have any concerns.

More evaluation is: needed to target the treatment accordingly. Is it post nasal drip? Is it asthma? Is it bronchitis or pneumonia? Is it gerd?  See your doctor for  a detailed evaluation.

Few: There are no long term adverse effects from using antihistamines.  Short term sides effects are typically from older antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) that can cause drowsiness and delayed reaction time.  New generation antihistamines such as claritin, clarinex, zyrtec, xyzal and Allegra are generally very well tolerated. No dependence  and few if any drug interactions.

Expired drugs: There should be no side effects as expiration is usually based on loss of drug effectiveness.  Drug companies err on the side of shortening times to expiration.  Actually many drugs are effective long after expiration dates.  Expired drugs are commonly used effectively by volunteer organizations when no other drugs are available.  Relax!
