Yes but...: Certainly, there is no harm to using Claritin (loratadine) and it can decrease itching, but there would likely be more relief with topical Hydrocortisone cream.

Mgt: I would recommend Claritin (loratadine) , topical caladryl and ice. If the reaction involves other symptoms such as respiratory distress please see the ED.

i have hives that started after insect bite more than a week back. i started taking zyrtec. then benadryl (diphenhydramine) and now started claritin today. the symptoms?

Are you switching ?: uWhat you didn't tell me is how you took the medications? If he if the Zyrtec wasn't working and you switch to the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and then again to Claritin, that is not surprising because you're going from a stronger to a weeker medication.  now, if you added the three, you  may be dealing with a the start of Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria and it would be helpful to explore other causes and treatments.

Yes it is: But be careful if you're driving or using machinery, and don't exceed recommended dosage, that's exceptional though, you don't want to repeat unless recommended by a physician, good luck

Yes: Loratidine products are some of the weakest oral antihistamines on the market. But a single 10mg daily dose may not meet the needs of every individual; it is safe to take a second dose. You may also experience better results with OTC products that contain cetirizine or levo-cetirizine as these have a faster onset of action and are generally much more effective than loratidine products.

i thought i had seasonal allergies so i took a claritin but it doesn't seem to help the congestion, steaming did help a bit but one nostril is just completely stuffed. what else can i do?

: If congestion worsens or continues, you should see your family doc for evaluation and possible treatment. Sometimes this type of congestion can develop in to a mild bacterial infection, esp if not relieved with an antihistamine. See your doc to be evaluated.

Sinusitis: Allergies can produce swelling that blocks drainage from the sinuses, and secondary sinus inflammation. You may need a decongestant (pseudoephedrine or oxymetozaline nasal spray) or possibly nasal steroids and saline irrigation with a neti-pot. If this doesn't clear things up you may have to be seen  by a doctor. Good luck, .

Yes, but why ?: Studies of loritadine show the medication is well tolerated at twice the recommended 10 mg dose. However, the same studies show no added benefit of the double dose in symptom relief over the regular dose schedule.

Loratadine: 10mg is the recommende dose, anythiing higher should be under medical guidance. Its safety has been studied up to 40mg a day, but it is sedating at that point.
