Yes: Angioedema (ae) of the tongue may compromise breathing. Ae in the absence of hives may be a symptom of c1 esterase deficiency. In this disease ae of the windpipe can lead to suffocation while ae of the gut can lead to severe pain & unnecessary surgery. Hives & ae may be symptoms of anaphylaxis a life-threatening allergic problem involving breathing, heart and digestive systems.

Antihistamines: Most physicians will treat urticaria with antihistamines. Often this requires higher than standard doses. In severe cases of angioedema, physicians often prescribe injectable epinephrine.  Sometimes steroids are used to get the hives under control but  often switched as soon as possible.It is helpful to see an allergist to try and identify any allergic triggers.

Urticaria/angioedema: the chronic idiopathic type (if no cause is found) can last  much longer, and resolves on its own, and nobody can predict when exactly will it resolve, most important is symptom control. You mentioned half a tablet of the 25 mg every 48 hours!! of which drug? if it is an antihistaminic of any kind,that's a minimal dose and probably you won't need more,if it is a steroid, better taper it,  C ur MD

Urticaria angioedema: Many possibilities.  Could be any medication, foods, chemicals in house, or sprays.  Sometimes clothes, anything new in house, pets, . Write down everything you do and keep searching.  Allergy test don't show everything you could react to.  Even vitamins, eye makeup, cosmetics and soap could be causing problem.

Not  sure: Symptoms like you describe can be found in serious rheumatologic conditions, require laboratory testing and biopsy, and serious medical consideration.  Get moving on seeking expert medical opinion now.  If you have had major weight loss, or weakness (difficulty walking) do not accept delay in the appointment.

ive had a very serious allergic reaction (angioedema) to fluconazole, and now ive broken out in hives after two different trials of omeprazole. are these two azole drugs related in any way? should i watch out for other azole drugs?

: Fluconazole and omeprazole are two different classes of drugs. They are not related chemically at all.  Based on your account you seem to have a possible reaction to omeprazole. You can see your primary care doctor, I am not sure if you can wait to do that, I don't have enough details. You can triage your concerns with telemedicine.

Please see your MD: who might refer you to an allergist/immunologist. With angioedema you should keep epinephrine handy. The allergist will sift through history and try to find a cause, which isn't present for most cases. Good luck

No: Most cases of hives and angioedema do not cause anaphylaxis.

No: Only a tiny %. If you have recurring episodes they will usually be the same. Consult a dermatologist about it. Be sure to bring all meds & vits etc. Do you take a BP med (ace inhibitor)?

Chronic urticaria: I presume you have had skin testing for allergens? I know of a tough couple cases just like yours that were due to an unrecognized gluten allergy.  Docs are used to thinking that gluten allergy means just celiac disease, but thats not true.
Try a gluten free diet for thirty days. It takes nearly two weeks to begin to lessen the symptoms. Take a look at Dr Perlmutter's book the Grain Brain.
