Urticaria: Urticaria is resolved when you don't get any more hives on the skin. Most urticaria disappear within 6 weeks.  However some people may have them for months or even years. Causes of urticaria are multiple. Most of the time it is an allergic reaction to a food or medication, sometimes allergic reaction to environment. Some people have autoimmune urticaria caused by a dysfunction of immune system.

A good allergist will help you sort through all the options.

Viral infectios(most common in children); medication, food, environmental, etc...Allergies; internal autoimmune, physical factors(exercise, hot or cold exposure, scratching and others), rarely hidden internal tumors or autoimmune conditions can cause you to react.

Not contagious: You are not at risk of catching urticaria from your boyfriend.  The best thing you could do is be gentle with him, scratch his back, and get him some Benadryl (diphenhydramine) :-).

If score 3 or more see your doctor.
