went to urologist and diagnosed with prostatitis  and given bactrim. this was about 3 days ago, but have had symptoms for about 6 days. when can i expect symptoms to subside? constant urge to urinate and not emptying.

Prostate infection: When antibiotics are started for a prostate infection they usually are effective to kill bacteria but the symptoms of prostate congestion lag behind. Usually within a 7-10 day period the symptoms you mentioned improve but if you get a fever or feel worse, a change of antibiotic may be needed. In that case notify your provider of your progress.

: Masturbation, no matter how frequent, is not the cause these symptoms. Penile erection on awakening ("morning wood") is normal; it happens in most males. You need to see a doctor about your symptoms and to be educated about sex, masturbation, and normal body functions. Good luck.

Enlarged prostate: As men get older, their prostate gland gets larger. This can obstruct urine flow, causing the symptoms you describe. He needs to go right away to see his doc for evaluation and treatment. While this can be effectively treated, if he waits too long, there are permanent problems than can result.

Frequent urination: The "white colour" may be due to white blood cells and that with frequency can be a sign of urinary tract infection, which are very common in young women. Other symptoms may be burning or pelvic cramping with urination, achiness, fever, abdominal or back pain, and even nausea. It is best to get a test (urinalysis) and treatment with antibiotics if positive. Drink plenty of water and try cranjuice.

No problem: Your residual urine is minute and I would not worry.  Only when residuals are greater than 150cc is there any real clinical significance.
