It can happen : Thrush is a fungal infection and can happen at any age. In infancy, it is common and often of no consequences. In adult, usually there is a cause: med use such as steroid/astha/copd inhalers, antibiotic use, uncontrolled diabetets, immunocompromised states such as hiv/aids, cancer/chemotherapy etc... I would consult for eval as to see why you got thrush. It is easily treatable. Good luck.

Many causes: We all have yeast in our mouths, we all have bacteria in our mouths. They tend to keep each other in check. Anything that causes the normal balance between the tow to alter can cause one or the other to take over. So if you were on antibiotics, if you were doing a lot of antiseptic mouth washes, if your immune system was stressed for any reason, you can have overgrowth of the yeast - and thrush.

'immuno-compromise' can be due to a virus (hiv, hepc etc.) or due to medications that suppress the immune system e.g. Steroids, meds for rheumatological disorders etc.  Also recent antibiotics can alter 'the bacterial flora' of the body and may cause 'yeast infections' such vaginal yeast or thrush. The treatment is topical 'anti-fungals.

Causes: People with a weakened immune system, whether due to illness or age, can make one more susceptible to getting thrush.  Other potential causes are poor oral hygiene, diabetes, heavy smoking and dry mouth.  Certain medications such as anitbiotics and steroids can alter the natural balance of the oral mucosa which can also lead to thrush.

It is not: Impossible. It can be quite common in people who nee to use inhaled steroids.
If you do not use inhaled steroids, then it can reflect a weakened immune system and it may be helpful to talk to your doctor.

Yes : It can be very painful.  There will be white stuff on your tongue.  This is easily treatable.   Your doctor can prescribe a Nystatin liquid medication.
