Sleep hygiene.: To reset your sleep clock, go to bed at the same time every night, awaken at the same time every morning, don't nap during the day, use the bed for sleeping (not eating, TV watching, reading, etc), if you awaken during the night, stay in bed until your determined awakening time.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Prescription pain meds can cause all sorts of side effects.  Altered sleep can be one of them (they can make people feel drowsy if they take them during the day, which can disrupt their sleep at night).

Accepted Answer

Start easy: Medications with low adverse effects include melatonin and other ones at the health food store.

Ambien and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are widely used these days but both have quite some side effects. Hopefully prescription free drugs will do the job.

However, sometimes there is an underlying problem that may cause sleep problems. Having it diagnosed by a sleep doc is useful for many patients.

How about what are: the Con's to using nitrazepam as a sleep medication?  It is a benzodiazapine. You can develop a tolerance to this class of medications. This is NOT a HEALTHY choice for a sleep aid.

Accepted Answer

I don't think it: Would be particularly healthy to sleep solidy through several days. Anesthesiologists some times administer medications for lengthy periods (such as an induced coma) but that would only be done if there is a medical indication. Anesthesia has very real possible side effects ; would  only be administered if there was a need.

how come i'm wide awake at night and then sleep during the day, why is trying to reverse it impossible without medication?

Sleep reversal: This is a complete reversal. There are several disorders that can do that, such as delayed sleep phase disorder. Try to avoid all medications, get up early in the morning with plenty of light, try staying awake during the  day (plenty of coffee if needed - is very safe). Then you should be tired for the night.

Otherwise sleep doc is useful.

Nitrazepam: This is long acting sedative and like many other medications in this group, works well for short term but should be avoided for long term use. Dependence is a common problem. They also become ineffective over time, if used continuously.

Sleep meds: Many are habit forming. Need to see physician and work out a course of treatment consider sleep study to determine if underlying problem interferes with your ability to sleep. Important to use sleep inducing environment eliminate noise no television etc to stimulate you. There are better options. Relaxation techniques etc.

Clarify: Does your  question  mean "can you drink (alcohol) near sleep..." , if so, it really depends on what medication you are on. Generally,  we do not promote alcohol consumption with meds because of either decreasing or increasing the action of the med you are taking.

my 2year old sleep ok apart frm snoring and heavy brethin not all the time is this normal she's not on any medication?

Accepted Answer

Snoring abnormal: While children can be heavy breathers at night, snoring is not normal. It can be caused by congestion or by large adenoids and tonsils. Sometimes kids can look like they're sleeping ok, but not be having restful sleep. Look for daytime fatigue. I recommend you take your daughter to the doctor for a check up to look for congestion or other causes for the snoring.
