i have shoulder blade pain that comes and goes. it's been getting worse and feels like its spread to my chest. how can i know if its knots or a tumor?

May need to visit yr: Any pain which is persisting and getting worse for more than 3-4 weeks requires examination by your doctor.Further testing with chest x-ray or a ct scan may be required to assess for any tumor underlying as the cause of this pain uless the pain goes away in 3-4 weeks.

Consider MRI: It is hard to say without a detailed exam.  But i would think if you had a ct scan of your chest just 3 months ago that was normal, the yield would be pretty low to get a repeat ct scan again looking for a pan coast tumor  ( unless there was something wrong with the first one). If you have not had one, consider an MRI of the thoracic and cervical spine to rule out a spinal cause.

An : An ultrasound can suggest what it is bit is not definitive. An ultrasound looks at fluid changes so for a cyst it is good to see the transition from the awl of the cyst to the inside fluid layer. Stll where it is can also influence the ultrasounds ability to discern detail. I.E. Behind a bone the sound waves may not get through as well.

While the tech may give someone preliminary info one really needs to wait for the formal report and for the ordering physician to review it and make sur the findings correspond and are relevant to the problem.  This last reason is why a lot of physicians/surgeons are starting to do their own musculoskeletal ultrasound in their own office setting. The ability for a surgeon who knows the anatomy primarily to see structures and do a relevant physical exam at the same time becomes of great value.

Maybe supraspinatus: The muscle in your upper shoulder blade is your supraspinatus. Pain there can be from injury to the muscle, impingement to its tendon (the rotator cuff) or from irritation to the nerve that goes to the muscle. You need an orthopedic surgeon, physical medicine or sports medicine doctor who can sort through these possibilities and prescribe appropriate treatment.

A variety of causes: Your condition is called scapular winging and usually affects only one side.  Causes include injury to one of the nerves called the long thoracic nerve if you had an injury. Parsonage turner syndrome is a viral syndrome that can affect the brachial plexus and cause scapular winging. This is a self limited condition and can take upto 1 year to resolve.  A condition called sick scapular syndrome can cause both scapulas to wing. Treatment is usually with physical therapy.  See a shoulder specialist to really find out what the cause is.

Many causes poss.: It can b from muscle strain 2 pleuritic pain referred 2 the back/scapular area. Some r of no great concern some could b serious c ur pcp and get a diagnosis, & if need, get a referral 2 an ortho. Pe, apical disease of the lung r some also. As u can c an eval is needed.
