Benign tumors exist.: Lung cancer is the most common visceral cancer in the world today.  Because of this, the presence of a mass lesion in the lungs is concerning.  Importantly, not all lung tumors are malignant, and that is good news.  The most common type of benign tumor is called a pulmonary hamartoma.   These benign tumors account for about 10% of small solitary lung lesions identified by imaging studies.

Yes: I am guessing from your question, but yes there can be pulmonary and bronchial carcinoid tumors. They are both a type of lung tumor that can be benign or cancerous. They can occur in the lung or "on" the lung in the breathing tube to the lung. These are relatively rare tumors.

Depends on the age: Of all the tumors, benign ones are rare in older smokers. Tumors in the lung as such are rare in children ; young non smokers. If you find one in this age group, benign tumors are common.

NSCLC usually: Takes time...I wait 6 weeks, and usually it is a tumor, not "tumors".  Symptom relief should occur sooner if treatment is directed against an obstruction, bleeding, cough or pain.

Compassion: While smoking starts as a bad habit, most smokers are addicted.  Even if the cancer was due to a bad habit, lung cancer is a serious illness with high mortality.  About half the people with lung cancer are dead within a year of diagnosis.  The person would appreciate your compassion, support and understanding.  Being self righteous  would not be helpful.  You may need to call on your faith.

Yes: Benign lung tumors make up  about 5% of lesions found in the lung.  The majority  are malignant i.e. squamous Ca , adenoCa and small cell neuroendocrine tumors. Among the rare but frequent benign lung lesions are the  a) Hamartoma :  made up of tissue from the lung's lining as well as tissue such as fat and cartilage. Then there are the b) Bronchial Adenomas  
 and c) lesions from inflammation.

No: Lung "tumors" may be benign or malignant (=cancer).
Cancers in the lung may be primary lung cancer (eg, small cell or non-small cell lung cancer, mesothelioma) or other cancers (eg lymphoma, thymoma, etc).
Cancers from other primaries (eg breast, colon, etc) may spread (metastasize) to the lung.

Yes: Commonly seen in small cell cancers; and sometimes in non small cells types as well.
