Compassion: While smoking starts as a bad habit, most smokers are addicted. Even if the cancer was due to a bad habit, lung cancer is a serious illness with high mortality. About half the people with lung cancer are dead within a year of diagnosis. The person would appreciate your compassion, support and understanding. Being self righteous would not be helpful. You may need to call on your faith.

Kindness: This is a difficult problem. I think that being supportive during the crisis with cancer is the main focus. Regardless of the cause the cancer is still the fight that needs support. Certain cancers might have a better outcome if smoking is stopped, but blame and shame rarely seem to work.
