is there a difference between sulfa and sulfur medications?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Many people have taken "sulfa" drugs (usually an antibiotic) and have had allergic reactions to them (usually hives).  This does not mean they are allergic to all medications containing the element "sulfur."  for example, you may be allergic to sulfamethoxazole (an antibiotic) but not to hydrochlorothiazide (a sulfur containing high blood pressure medication).

Psilocybin mushrooms: Psilocybin mushrooms have hallucinogenic effects.  Whether they contain sulfa or not - they are still unsafe for health.

Not a sulfa: Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone, totally unrelated to sulfonamides.

: Yes, there is no cross allergic reaction between Muciprocin (Bactroban) and PCN or Sulfa.

i am allergic to sulfa containing medications. i just bought a cough syrup (torex-br) and it has terbutaline sulphate. is this also sulfa?

Check with pharmacy: SUlfa drugs are a class of drugs called sulfonimides, Terbutaline is not in that class, and the sulfate refers to a part of the terbutaline. Should be ok, but always best to check with the pharmacist, or you obstetrician. Hope this helps!

Allergy: Neither of those compounds are sulfa based.  Patients with allergy to penicillin derivatives are said to have up to a 5% incidence of reactions to cephalosporins, although whether that is direct cross allergenicity is in question. Don't know what problems you are referring to.

does losartan treat edema??? i developed swelling in legs/feet--dr suspected my bp medication (amlodipine) & told me to stop taking. she initially prescribed hcz for the swelling but, because i reminded her i have sulfa allergy, replaced w/ losartan?

: Losartan is a blood pressure medication in the ARB class. It is not generally used to treat edema, but it also doesn’t cause edema the way amlodipine can. HCTZ is a diuretic and is sometimes used to treat edema, but good catch about the sulfa allergy!  There are other diuretics that do not have a sulfa molecule and might be useful along with the losartan.

Sulfa vs. sulfite: Sulfa drugs include antibiotics [septra, bactrim, pediazole] some water pills, sulfonylurea diabetes medicines, celebrex (celecoxib). There are no related food allergies. More information here:

Probably nothing: "Approx 3% of population mounts allergic reaction to sulfonamide antibiotics,w/ the most common reaction being rash.Studies have failed to show any cross-sensitivity among the three different classes (which incl Topamax).
