A member asked:

Does losartan treat edema??? i developed swelling in legs/feet--dr suspected my bp medication (amlodipine) & told me to stop taking. she initially prescribed hcz for the swelling but, because i reminded her i have sulfa allergy, replaced w/ losartan?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Losartan is a blood pressure medication in the ARB class. It is not generally used to treat edema, but it also doesn’t cause edema the way amlodipine can. HCTZ is a diuretic and is sometimes used to treat edema, but good catch about the sulfa allergy! There are other diuretics that do not have a sulfa molecule and might be useful along with the losartan.
