VARIES: Really depends on cause, and if a main branch or division.  If myelin coverings affected, reversal could occur in 4-5 weeks, but if internal axon injured, might take months if ever.  This can be tested by electrodiagnostic studies, which may confirm prognosis.

have trigmenial nerve operation to numb the nerve work but next day got tmj is it related in any way. my dr does not believe he did anything wrong with operation the numbs the nerve?

My response: You are very young, at age 22, to experience classic tic doulereux, or severe painful trigeminal problem, but a sensory neuropathy secondary to viral cause might cause semblance of swelling.  If you do have pain, search for underlying Multiple Sclerosis, or another intracranial cause.  Have a neurologist manage.

Trigeminal neuropath: Check thyroid studies, check lyme, herpes I titer , sed rate , CRP ANA for autoimmune disease and have dentist evaluate for temporamadibular  joint dysfunction, check MRI for MS. if all negative conider trial  of steroids, gabapentin and ENT consult.

Tightness: If you are experiencing tightness, this is more likely your facial nerve.  Also, could be something associated with your electrolytes. CN 5 should move your jaw, CN 7 moves rest of your face.

Usually: At five months of symptoms you should get checked.
I recommend seeing a neurologist.  There are a number of good medications that can control the symptoms.

Depends: Trigeminal neuralgia IS a neuropathy but a very specific type. If you have shocklike lancinating sudden intermittent pain, then you may have trigeminal neuralgia of that division of the trigeminal nerve.

Probably not: Tn is a neurological disorder and treatment that treats the nerve is the most common treatment that is effective.  That usually requires a prescription and sometimes surgery.

A few possibilities: Could be tension headache (HA),but they rarely last that long.Sinus HA-if severe-can cause all your symptoms.Onset &amp; type of pain are impt: if it started in neck/upper back-could be musculoskeletal dysf.Could be viral or Zoster.Could be inflammation of cranial nerves.Time to see dr.Osteopathic manipulation may help if rib, vertebral, or cranial problem, sinusitis.Neuroprolotherapy could help.
