See the Podiatrist: Today, it typically means a severe wet infection of the foot.  It can vary in severity from just skin macerated to swelling and sepsis.  "trench foot" is a term coined in wwi which described the wet, macerated foot infection that occurred when gi's boots and socks got wet in trenches and were unable to remove them to allow the feet to dry.  Inevitably, it broke down the skin and became infected.
