Cause??: The most common cause of rickets is severe vitamin d deficiency.  Muscle spasms associated with rickets are usually because of low calcium which can happen with early vitamin d treatment.  Kids often need extra calcium. With muscle spasms and rickets, your doctor needs to be made aware asap because if the cause is low calcium that may be very dangerous and requires immediate treatment.

Maybe: I would suggest seeing a dentist to determine the condition of your teeth.  The teeth may be more prone to tooth decay or coming loose but it may be possible to prevent those problems with aggressive preventative care.
Any malformation of the tops of the teeth can be treated with crowns.. If it is needed.

Rickettsial Rx: Doxycycline is the drug of choice; it is preferred over other tetracyclines for treatment of rickettsial infections. 
Chloramphenicol may be used as an alternative but it has potential bone marrow toxicity. Recent data from europe suggest that fluoroquinolones, such as Ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, may be effective in the treatment of certain rickettsial infections.

Hard to find: Rickets requires a deficiency of vitamin D to extremely low levels.  The usual RDA of 400 u per is designed to totally prevent this condition and vit D is usually added to milk.  I imagine there are a few kids somewhere in the USA with extreme diets (enforced by well meaning parents) or with severe malabsorption problems who might have the condition.  But I have not heard of them yet.

Rickets findings may include:  widened or abnormally shaped metaphysis part of the bone, obviously bowed femurs, osteopenic bones with decreased mineralization, flared ribs called rachitic rosary, multiple fractures at different healing stages without unusual trauma.

Low calcium, phosphorus, elevated alkaline phosphatase , neuromuscular irritability  result.
