A  None I'm aware of: Autism, or the expanded spectrum, label placed on kids or adults with behaviors & differences in function that fit a specific pattern. There is no medication that i'm aware of for autism, although many have been tried over the years. Each patient may have individual needs based on testing & exam that would deserve medications. These would be prescribed & monitored on a case by case basis.

No: Unfortunately, researchers have not discovered what causes autism nor what cures autism. Autism is not cured by weekly therapy, more therapy, or even intensive therapy... because there is no known way to correct the problem in the brain. In recent years, many types of children with autistic traits are just being labeled "autistic", but we will be better able to figure things out in 20-30 years.

None: There is no specific treatment for autism. It is a whole team approach to treat autism including occupational, physical and speech therapy. They also benefit from picture exchange and behavioral modification.

Medications are used: To treat irritability, aggression, anxiety, depression & adhd which  occur more often in  people  with autism than in the general population. . They are  effective & safe, usually in low doses. Arbaclofen will be marketed to treat social withdrawal in children with fragile x syndrome, about 30% of whom have autism. It is being studied for use of this core symptom in children with autism.

Multi-dimensional: Autism manifests in various forms, probably has various causes, and is extremely complex to treat. Behavioral and social interventions are important, and increasingly psychoactive medications play an important role. These meds need be carefully selected & titrated for the individual, possibly addressing such features as anxiety, anger, mood, hyperactivity, etc.

Difficult issues: These are difficult cases, but in conjunction with other professionals working together, yes there can be improvement.  These children need a wide variety of supports & care, including nutritional, behavioral, educational, and medical.  I suggest you read "the impossible cure" by dr. Amy lansky.  She recounts the story of her own son's treatment with homeopathy, after conventional efforts failed.

Many out there, but: Only some are considered as established treatments according to national autism center.  They are: antecedent package, behavioral package, comprehensive behavioral treatment for young children, joint attention intervention, modeling, naturalistic teaching strategies, peer training package, pivotal response treatment, schedules, self-management, and story-based intervention package.

Better diagnosis: Remember those kids who were in special ed when you were in school? Mine had 250 kids, and there were about 8 in the special education class. That meant 1/30 had autism. Autism now encompasses the former diagnosis of mental retardation, developmental delay, conduct disorders, and most learning disabilities. They are all considered part of the spectrum, it's not worse, just definition changes.

Are you kidding?: It sounds preposterous. Autistic patients are highly rigid & anxious. Taking a trip to the supermarket is overwhelming - so taking an "acid trip" would be especially torturous for autistics. I doubt that even timothy leary himself would have advanced such an idea - even during one of his own trips!

Locate Autism Center: Have your son evaluated by a neurodevelopmental center. Autism centers of excellence are located at many us universities. Search the web. These experts identify methods (usually visual) that help communication. Many centers have specific adult programs.
Local branches of arc or autism speaks may  provide support and resources for you as you plan your son's future. Doing this alone is very hard.
