Pain management: The arachnoid is the spider web appearing membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.  Many patients with back pain or neck pain are given the diagnosis of arachnoiditis.  This implies that no other cause can be found except inflammation of this membrane.  Surgery and steroid injections may result in this condition as a side effect.  It implies scarring.  Treatment is very difficult.

Alternative to Meds: Many treatments may be tried including surgery, medications, stretches, laser therapy, physical therapy, etc. Personally, I have had some excellent success treating arachnoiditis with osteopathic manipulation.  Perhaps consulting a do might provide a non-med, non-surgical, permanent solution.

Non-opioids: For the burning pain associated with arachnoiditis, non-opioid pain meds may work better like membrane stabilizers (gabapentin) or some anti-depressents.  Patients also improve with spinal cord stimulation.  I hope you do better soon.  Talk to you doctor about the above options.

i have a very rare spinal disease called adhesive arachnoiditis . i am wondering if there is any treatment?

Accepted Answer

Yes: First line treatment would be medications such as neurontin, lyrica, (pregabalin) or cymbalta.  These have a beneficial effect on neuralgic pain.  A more aggressive treatment could be used if pain relief from medication is inadequate.  The most effective is spinal cord stimulation but an inter-thecal pump can also be tried.  Finally, don't forget relaxation therapies usually taught by pain clinic psychology.

None is the best tre: Steroids, symptomatic treatments have been tried. The response varies from patient to patient also the cause of arachnoid iris may be a factor, eg epidural, chemotherapy, trauma, infection etc.

How is it diagnosed?: Some people can have sharp shooting pains in different nerves or muscle spasms as a result of nerve compression or previous surgery or invasive procedure on spine get MRI with contrast show enhancement of meningies or arachnoid---the treatment relate to finding a cause or just treat the resulting symptom--has there been a spinal tap?Did you have meningitis before, etc.

my husband has arachnoiditis. the butrans patch didn't work. it is now being treated with 10 mg oxy and 30 mg oxy. barely livable. what else will help?

Avoid surgery, : Which perhaps resulted in postop scarring and arachoiditis, and also do not do steroid injections.  Might consider dorsal column stimulator, and might try some of the nerve pain suppressor meds, such as lyrica, gabapentin, cymbalta, savella, (milnacipran) tricyclics with stelazine.  Sometimes, fentanyl patch of value, but very potent narcotic!

Tough case: Sorry to hear you have this condition.  Since it is not correctable surgically you are really stuck with managing the symptoms.  There are some interventional pain management techniques that may help.  Spinal cord stimulation is an excellent option as an addition to medication management and psychological counseling for coping techniques.

MRI: The condition is diagnosed by seeing scar tissue and adhesions causing nerves within the spine to "stick" or clump together.  The condition is seen on MRI or a myelogram followed by a ct scan.

A chronic condition: The condition causes both pain and neurological dysfunction (numbness, tingling, bowel, bladder or sexual dysfunction).  The disease has no know cure at the present time but pain can be managed by one of several techniques (see my previous answer).
