The Drixine Is Bad: Nasal decongestants help congestion but at a price... they wear off and you end up stuffier than ever.

Check with an ENT physician to rule out deviated septum’s, allergies, sinusitis, nasal polyps, etc etc.

Nasal congestion : Your symptoms are consistent with an upper respiratory infection which could be viral or bacterial. You did not note how long you have had symptoms. If over 7-10!days would recommend seeing an ENT specialist to see if you need antibiotics.. also would check your pulse , not sure if the palpitations are from medicine you are taking or your illness.

Maybe: If it is allergies you can take Allegra (fexofenadine) over the counter and this will improve your problem.  If the sore throat is an issue you can see a doctor and get screened for strep so you do not have to take antibiotics unecessarily. Ofte time the antiseptic mouthwashes if gargled daily can improve the situation.  The body aches can also resolve simply with excedrin.  Drink fluids. See a doctor if worried.

Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to look for strep). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) may lessen pain temporarily.

Generally, no.: It's either going to occur or not (the sore throat, that is).  I don't think presence of a sore throat with post nasal drip (source is usually rhinitis) would warrant worrying about it being dangerous.

Sore throat: If this has been going on for several weeks, i would have you see your doctor as otc medications at this time would only mask the problem.  The problem will most likely not go away on its own at this point.  Feel better!

Sinusitis: Try flonase 2 sprays in each nostril for a week, hot shower to the face, hot rag to the face, soothing beverages, ibuprofen 800 q 8 hours for symptomatic relief. If you spike a fever or have pressure in your sinuses that causes headache or discomfort see MD. You should also get expert consultation/imaging coordinated by an expert in ENT Surgery given chronicity of your Sx. Good luck.

Nasal rinse...: Sods like allergic rhinitis - postnasal drip - very common either with virus or environmental allergies - is may be most helpful to " dissolve" &amp; " mechanically cleanse " mucous by using " Nasal Saline Rinse &amp; Netti pot" . it moisturizes nasal passages, thins mucous and prevent heavy thick " globes like sensation in a throat.  Also steam inhalation, warm beverages,  and nasal steroid spray helps.
