do any home remedies really cure ingrown nails?

Removal...: ...Is the only permanent solution. Just the painful border can be removed, or the entire nail if necessary. After removal you can let the border grow out again, or your doctor can use a chemical to stop the nail from regrowing. If you're concerned, don't perform bathroom surgery on yourself. That can lead to an infected ingrown toenail, which could require antibiotics.

Fungus: Either you have fungus under nails or subtle infection( ingrown toenail). Fungus (mycotic nails) is very common, and sometimes very difficult to treat.
An ingrown toenail is an inflamed skin adjacent to the nail, and then gets  infected(usually painful, red  +swollen). Treatment - soaking foot in warm ,soapy water.
For fungus-some treatments work topically. Might need oral meds or Podiatry .

Not painful: I assume that you are referring to an injection of local anesthetic into  the toe to numb it. This is called a "digital block" and if done with care is not painful. (hurts less than a dental injection.) it is possible that your doctor will "freeze" the skin with a spray instead of using an injection. I would describe it as briefly uncomfortable, but not painful.

See the podiatrist: The nail has changed its normal path of growth, and any attempt from your end may cause the nail to ingrow more.  This could lead to more pain and possible infection.  Consider having it examined properly.  Your doctor may suggest treatment with debridement (cutting) as well as use of a topical medication.  If it is a chronic problem, a matrixectomy may be suggested.  Have it checked.
