i have a hiael hernia in my esphogous and had every treatment for that, yet iam still having great discomfort, is surgery next ?

Surgery is an option: If you have a symptomatic hiatal hernia and the traditional medical treatments haven't been successful then surgery is worthwhile to consider. Discuss with your medical doctor if you are fit enough for general anesthesia and then meet with a surgeon who is well versed in laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair. The surgery can lead to a markedly improve quality of life, if the right doctor is seen.

Hernia: Not necessarily.  If it does not bother you, is not increasing in size and does not incarcerate (get stuck) then you do not absolutely need to fix it.  If, however,  the above things are happening or it is a larger hernia thru a small defect in the muscle then it is better to fix it early vs later.

Inguinal Hernia: Increasing pain, increasing risk that your intestine will drop into your scrotum and cause death or permanent damage to the testicles leading to no testosterone.

Surgery or wait/see: Watchful waiting can be an option for small umbilical hernias, where it's very unlikely for bowel to enter & get stuck (incarcerated). Large umbilical hernias can also be left alone if it's very unlikely for bowel to get incarcerated. However, only option for hernias of any sort is surgical repair to prevent painful incarceration & strangulation of bowel. Best to go see surgeon for his/her opinion.

i am a male and active in sports. recently diagnosed with umbilical hernia. is there other treatment method available other than surgery?

You can ignore it: This label means there is a penetration of underlying tissues trough the layers that  are meant to hold it in place. If it includes a loop of small intestine that loop could become trapped/die/and germs escape to your blood and kill you. If it is small &amp; never bothers you,  ignore it. If you notice it often or it ever causes pain it is better to fix it when you are healthy than wait until trapped.

Only option : It would be nice if these could be treated non-surgically, but there is no other option. Inguinal hernia, unlike umbilical hernia in children is thought to have a lower overall risk for repair rather than observation. See a pediatric surgeon for a more complete evualuation. Appointment in the next week or two should be ok if there are no symptoms. If severe pain, head to an ER. Hope this helps!

Hernia: Hernia extending into the scrotum near the testucke is not an early stage hernia. A large hernia extending into the scrotum should be surgically repaired. There is no other treatment other than surgery.

Defer to Surgeon: It all depends on the type of surgery and the complications, if any, that arise. Due to these common facts, i would defer to the recommendations of the surgeon taking care of you. There will be post operative instructions given to you when you are sent home that will cover this.

Maybe: Hiatal hernia and reflux ate two separate things. Reflux causes heartburn and regurgitation, and may be aggravated by a hiatal hernia. There are procedures to stop reflux, some of which include hernia repair. A large hiatal hernia may cause difficulty eating, early satiety, and intermittent chest pain among others. Surgery is the only way to fix them. Meds only control some reflux symptoms.
