It depends: It is best to first discuss the details of your prior penicillin allergy with your doctor. If the allergy is questionable a penicillin allergy test may be ordered. Ideally, patients with a known penicillin allergy should undergo a desensitization process so they may then tolerate penicillin. Less effective antibiotics include: tetracycline, doxycycline, erythromycin, Ceftriaxone & azithromycin.

Syphilis: Yes. But they are not as effective. Many doctors will treat with the second line therapies unless there is brain involvement or a treatment failure to eradicate the syphilis. In this event they work to temporarily desensitize the patient of their penicillin allergy and then give the better treatment.

These are different: Syphylis and HIV  are caused by two different organisms. But if you test positive for one sti (std), you should be screened for all others.

Get it chcked by MD: Rash is probably not related to Syphylis.Your retest btiter is down four fold.And we suppose you were treated with proper dose of Penicillin.I suggest you follow up with your Doctor and let him look at the rash and decide if it needs any treatment.The rash is most probably due to some other cause.

Should have cleared: The skin rash of secondary syphilis typically clears up within a few days of starting penicillin. Any rash persisting 10+ days (the usual duration of IV pen for NS) probably wasn't syphilis, and syphilis rash usuallyis body wide, not one area like the back. Maybe penicillin allergy if it started after treatment began. In any case, show it to your doctor. Good luck!

Penicillin is the only drug known effective during pregnancy & can be used with rapid desensitization.

If past allergy was not severe, most people can safely be treated with 3 long-acting penicillin injections and not worry about remembering pills. Also, doxy can cause photosensitivity, i.e. susceptibility to sunburn, and often is avoided in your part of the world.

i had vrdl 1:64. i got 1 penicillin 1.2 shot. i took 2 tablets of doxycyline hyclate for 2 weeks everyday. is this enough to cure my syphilis. am hiv-?
