It depends: It is best to first discuss the details of your prior penicillin allergy with your doctor. If the allergy is questionable a penicillin allergy test may be ordered. Ideally, patients with a known penicillin allergy should undergo a desensitization process so they may then tolerate penicillin. Less effective antibiotics include: tetracycline, doxycycline, erythromycin, Ceftriaxone & azithromycin.

Syphillis: Depends on the allergic reaction you have to pcn. An allergist can perform a penicillin desensitization for therapy or 2nd line therapy is typically doxycycline.
