Lymph node: It could be a lymph node, cyst, infection, abscess or fatty tissue. You should see a doctor to have it diagnosed and treated.

These lymph nodes: are located behind your external ear.  Lymph node enlargement is caused most commonly by infection or inflammatory process, but rarely it can mean malignancy.  If it is 1cm, it is probably not worrisome for neoplasm.  Show it to your doctor just to be sure.

Only once: A person can only get mumps once. One of the two diagnoses was  inaccurate (or possibly both). Periauricular lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes around the ear) may represent a reaction to potential infection ("reactive lymph nodes") and is good - nature working for your benefit.

Likely infection: There are a number of conditions which cause lymph node enlargement, with infection being the most common cause.  

Behind the ear nodes can come from the ear, the skin, teeth and possibly sinuses.  

Take some Ibuprofen (if it's safe for you) and if the node persists, seeks care.

A few things: Generally speaking, infection or inflammation cause swollen lymph nodes. In response to an infection, the lymph nodes increase production of immune cells to fight the infection, increasing their size and creating some tenderness in the process. Some certain types of cancers can also cause similar swelling. Simple blood tests can evaluate these possibilities, but the vast majority are not cancer.

Go Tomorrow to Doc: Symptoms and an enlarged, hard, unresolving lymph node needs prompt evaluation to ensure it is not a cancer (lymphoma).  It likely will need to be excised and taken to the lab for cell analysis. You also will likely need blood testing.

Don't sit on this. It must be evaluated sooner rather than later.

Probably normal : Moveable is always better. If it's painless and asymptomatic, 1cm is normal. If it's starts having symptoms or grows, would be reasonable to work up further or consider removing.
