Puss under pressure.: Abcesses are puss under pressure.  They get very hard when there is no way for the abcess contents to drain.  Generally they will try to break through to an adjacent structure or through the skin to relieve the pressure.  If this is not possible they will become rock hard and very painful.  Eventually all abcesses rupture and bring great relief, but a scalpel is sometimes helpful.

Peritonsillar absces: Peritonsillar abscesses are really not very fun, to say the least.  Much like other abscesses, they usually won't go away without some kind of treatment.  I have seen, on rare occasion, where the abscess will spontaneously rupture, but by then, other problems deep in the neck can develop.  The most common treatments are needle aspiration of the abscess or incision and drainage and tonsillectomy.

ABSCESS DRAINAGE: Surgical abscess drainage is  a minor surgical procedure depending on the location of the abscess. Incision and drainage ( i&d) is usually done by surgeon with or without  anesthesia and pain is nil and recovery rapid  with antibiotic intake for the infection.

Staph? Hidradenitis?: This could be recurent boils etc due to staph, strep, or other bacteria. Another possibility is hidradenitis suppurativa, an inflammatory conditions that behaves a lot like infection but antibiotics don't help. Discuss with your doctor -- or perhaps see a dermatologist. Interesting: Paraspinal abscess is an infection of the area around the spinal cord.  If the abscess compresses nerves, it can cause serious neurologic problems including paralysis.  It can come from an area of adjacent infection or it can be seeded from a distant site via the bloodstream.  This is usually a surgical emergency or it can be drained by ct guidance. Iv antibiotics.
