Multifactorial: Although clearly a genetic disorder, the mode of inheritence for tourette's is complex, involving multiple defective genes, and perhaps even an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. There is also clearly a genetic association between the triad of tourette's, ocd, and adhd, and i generally screen patients i diagnose with tourette's for concurrent adhd and/or ocd.

Yes: Tourette syndrome can be diagnosed at anytime before age 18.  Tourette syndrome is any combination of verbal and motor tics. The initial vocal tics are usually clearing of the throat, a snorting or sniffing noise, and coughlike noise and therefore these noises miss recognition as tics.

For the OCD: Tourette syndrome, adhd & OCD are hand-in-glove. A specific form of cognitive-behavioral therapy called exposure-and-response-prevention is used for the ocd. Oppositional defiant disorder often accompanies the adhd. It is treated with behavior-modification & behavior management training for parents. Social skills group therapy & tutoring for associated learning disabilities are often needed.

Such problems as visual loss, weakness, imbalance or incoordination would not be part of tourette's.  Nice that we have effective ms meds these days, and many new meds work very well for tourette's.

Yes: Tourette's is classified as a neurological disorder. It can be a stand alone condition or coexist with others disorders like adhd or bipolar. Not every person with a tic has tourette's and isolated tics  in children are not that uncommon.  Sudden onset of tourette's can be caused by a strep throat infection and if caught early can have good resolution. Meds are often used in chronic cases.

Simply: A person with Tourette's has a feeling that they just can't stop, to do or say some thing.  That might be a noise or word, or body movement, or humming or tapping or biting on something.  Telling them not to do it makes it worse, but asking them to play or talking with them might stop it for a little while, when they are thinking about something else.
