It is variable but: generally by 4 months post-op you should be comfortable sitting for that long.  Don't forget that a total hip replacement is a major surgery with a major piece of hardware.

why does my thigh, front feel like it will give out, not support me, if i tighten the thigh muscle? 15 months post-op total hip replacement, anterior approach. scheduled for psoas tendon release for snapping hip syndrome. concerned about the release?

: Likely question to ask is whether the thigh problem is due to disuse atrophy or nerve problem associated with prior surgery.  An EMG study can help sort this out, and could be easily done prior to further surgery.

i am  6 days post op total hip replacement. can i take miralax (polyethylene glycol) twice daily until bowel movement?

Yes..: Especially if it's been several days or since before your surgery that you had a full bowel movement. Try one dose first and see if that helps. If not, then move on to two doses a day which should certainly help you have some kind of movement and relief. Good luck!

Mild to moderate: The pain with hip replacment surgery is a function of the damage to the tissues as one tries to accurately place the new joint.  Surgeons using techniques to minimize the damage will have less pain post op.  The direct anterior approach to hip replacement offers the least damage to the muscles when performed by a surgeon experienced in this technique.

why would you still have pain after a total hip replacement. in the pre-op discussion, the dr said sometimes you don't get rid of the pain. if that happens, and it did, what should be the next step? groin pain and lateral hip area pain?

: Yes, if you have chronic atrial fibrillation and rate is under control. Cardiologist will decide how to handle your anticoagulant perioperatively. Usually, if you are taking non warfarin anticoagulant, the medication can be held one day pre-op and then restarted post op if no problem during the operation.

Overal l a small %: The number of people under  60 who have hip replacements is growing.  It is a small percentage of the overall number of replacements but still a large number nationally.

A younger person must understand that there is a good chance that they will need a revision or second hip replacement in the future.

how can you treat minimally invasive total hip replacement ?

Muscle sparing surg: Min invasive surgery is a bit of a misnomer. Tthe key issue is min damaging or muscle sparing surgery while successfully placing the hip implants securely and correctly.  This is best accomplished through the direct anterior approach. The less muscle damage- the quicker recovery and less pain.  This technique allows a more stable implant and more accurate leg legnth determination.
