Usually splint: X-rays cannot see ligaments, therefore if a finger x-ray showed a ligament injury, it was most likely due to an avulsion injury (the ligament is not torn but actually tears a small piece of bone away from its point of attachment).  This is usually treated by immobilization, sometimes by surgery.  It is best to consult a hand surgeon for a definitive treatment plan.

This may depend on : the finger involved and as to exactly what specific type of injury that was sustained.  The most common type of splinting for simple injuries is buddy taping where one finger is taped to the adjacent one for stability but still allow for range of motion to avoid stiffness. Simple analgesics such as tylenol, (acetaminophen) ibuprofen/naproxen are usually enough to subdue the pain.

Cervical pathology: Have you ever injured your neck? Or is it possible you may have herniated disks in the cervical spine? Possibly one place to look.

Accepted Answer

Varies.: Typically a grade 1 means there is pain with minimal injury to the ligament.  If there is an actual tear, the grade goes up to a grade 2 or 3.  Healing varies per person.  When there is full range of motion, no swelling, and equal strength compared to your opposite hand, then it is safe to return to sports.

2 coll, palmar plate: 2 collateral ligaments, palmar plate and capsule. Every time there is an injury, you get permanent damage. It heals with scar.
Except bone, it heals with bone.

Finger: The only way to know if your sprained a finger or tore a ligament is to see how much mobility you have.  If there is swelling bruising and redness then ice anti inflammatory agents are needed before and cray and no office visit
