Depends: If you have insurance usually it is covered.  If no insurance it can be done economically with a special that the dentist office is offering.  Can range from $59 to $100s.   Contact your local dentist and get a price.

ADA approved paste: Any over the counter Fluoride toothpaste approved by the ada should be both gentle and effective when used 2 to 3 times a day.  I would recommend the simplest Fluoride toothpaste without a lot of extra ingredients. Some of the newer toothpastes such as crest prohealth contain so many ingredients that can irritate sensitive patients.  Just use a name brand simple Fluoride toothpaste.

Xray, cleaning, exam: Depending on your child's age, the hygienest or assistant will take a couple of dental xrays.  If your child is too young dental xrays may be too difficult. Then the hygienest will do a thorough but gentle cleaning.  The dentist will then examine your child to see if there is any tooth decay or other oral pathology.  Reassure your child that it will be an easy and gentle experience.

15-20 minutes.: Dental cleaning and good oral hygiene is very important not only for your oral cavity, but studies clearly indicate that one remains healthier if keep teeth clean, limit the plaque, avoid periodontal disease or have it treated, regular brushing and flossing.  The dental hygienist can go over this in detail with you, and will also give you guidelines as to frequency of check specific to you., .

They go deeper: Periodontists are dentists who have chosen to go on further in the treatment of the gums and bone surrounding teeth.  They still clean teeth like a gp but they also will go deeper into the gums and may even fold back the gums to get to the super deep crud that has formed on the roots below the gum line. They also restore lost gum tissue thru grafting.  Much more but not enuf room here.  Earl.
