Sore throat: During removal no pain you are under anesthesia after there is swelling in the back of the throat and a sore throat for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. There occasionally os some bleeding about a week after removal so be aware of this and let your surgeon know if this bleeding happens

It depends: This depends upon if you have breathing problems solely due to enlarged tonsils. Your breathing is also impacted by your weight, use of or exposure to tobacco smoke, size of tonsils and adenoids, whether you have allergies or asthma.  Review these questions your primary care provider and/or ear nose and throat/otorhinolaryngologist.

Possible: The 3 major reasons why tonsillectomy is performed are 1.) recurrent infections, 2.) severe upper airway obstruction, and 3.) foul smelling odor caused by retained food particles in the tonsils.  The tonsils are never removed electively to alter voice quality or the ability to whistle.  It is true that tonsillectomy may widen the oral cavity and improve voice quality.

When indicated: Less and less tonsillectomies are done now a days  , due to better antibiotics , improved oral hygiene , etc.  See your doctor will refer you to a ENT specialist , if indicated  will remove , not based on your desire to get them removed.

Adult tonsillectomy: Generally. Always have risk of excessive bleeding, anesthesia mishaps, post-op and delayed bleeding (7-10 days after). Risk should be minimal in properly selected patients. Performed for recurring infecting, peritonsillar abscesses, sleep apnea, cancer diagnosis.

Sore throat: The recovery has some swelling and soreness of the throat. Avoid eating mucous producing foods like ice cream and milk
Sometines there is bleeding about a week out so let your surgeon know if this happens

Maybe: There are newer methods of tonsil removal that are claimed to be less problematic, resulting in less post-operative pain or bleeding but the data which support this claim is limited. Unfortunately this is just a difficult procedure to perform without significant post-operative pain and a significant risk of post-operative bleeding.

Yes: As soon as swelling goes down you can swallow. Cold ice cream helps reducing inflammation and swelling.

Accepted Answer

Perhaps: If the tonsils are exceptionally large, removing them will certainly change the resonance of the voice.  Such patient typically have a very flat voice prior to surgery which becomes more resonant and natural-sounding following tonsillectomy.  Small tonsils tend not to have such a profound effect on the voice.
