It varies with cause: Most of the tonsil infections and throat infection (pharyngitis) are viral. If you are close to toddlers and day care children, then you would be exposed to many viruses. To prevent the infection, you coud stay away from these children. You may have chronic tonsillar abscess which may flare up, or you may have chronic sinusitis which may irritate your throat. I would recommend to see your doctor.

Coughing has many causes and sometimes different causes are happening at the same time. It often requires different treatments to get a bad cough under control-like medicines to treatment bronchospasm, post nasal drip, gastroesophageal reflux, etc.

Tonsillolith: This is almost certainly a tonsil &quot;stone&quot; from your tonsil being hyperplastic from the mono. The masses are actually keratin. You can dislodge it with a water pick if you wish.

Severe Sinusitis: Hello, your sinus CT report is somewhat confusing. Tonsils are located in the back of the oral cavity and the sinuses drain into the nasal cavity. Maybe the grey areas you were seeing were polyps. The cefdinir is an appropriate antibiotic for treatment. Symptoms to monitor would be increasing fever, lethargy, facial and particularly eye swelling. If these occur, visit your closest ER promptly.

Throat infection: Go see your physician. Most  throat infections need evaluation. It is irrelevant if you have staph versus other bacteria causing your trouble. You will not find a diagnosis or treatment here.

Maybe antibiotic: It really depends if the inflammation is viral or bacterial. If there is no fever measured by thermometer, and there is no white pathches on tonsils, probably rial. Give tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. If there is high fever, white patches, and inability to swallow, more likely bacterial and will need antibiotics.  If child not better in three days, have a doc look at it.
