Yes: Both are possible.  You can get an ige blood test to see if you are allergic.  It is available from immunocap at quest labs.  Intolerance is often related to the acid content of tomatoes.

The Allergist will offer an interpretation of the test in the context of your past symptoms and may offer skin test or foodtrial

been on nexium for three weeks for mild gerd at night. if i don't take it exactly every 24 hours, i get heart burn from fizzy drinks or tomato sauce that i definitely didn't have before. it's like it made symptoms worse and during the day. why?

Avoid  acidic foods: and drinks. Tomatoes can aggravate gastritis/GERD. Carbonated beverages will form carbonic acid after being ingested. If non-responsive to Nexium, get tested for H. pylori bacteria.

I would say no: I don't think we can make a blanket statement that it's bad for everyone. It can be bad for certain people, for example if you're allergic to it. Or perhaps if it gives you heart burn, then we can say its bad for you.

Tomatoes contain lycopene which is an antioxidant that fights free radicals (helps to prevent cancer).  When you cook tomatoes it significantly increases the amount of bioavailable lycopene.

See below: Assuming you are otherwise healthy (no renal disease or GERD), eating tomatoes shouldn't be a problem. However, you still need variety. 1) Limit how many tomatoes you buy from the store. If you grow your own, cut them up and freeze them - harder to get to. 2) Consciously think about other fruits/veggies and mix them with your tomatoes. You're craving for tomatoes will fade a little.
