i had my achilles tendon repaired about 3 years ago. i get cramps and my foot becomes numb sometimes, especially when i've been exercising, walking or standing too long. is this normal?

Pain: It would be unlikely that  the tendon repair would be causing your symptoms now.  Calf injury, electrolyte problems, DVT or vascular problems possible.

Probably overuse: Anytime you stress the body after periods of inactivity, you can overuse certain structures, ie: muscles, tendons, ligaments.  This can lead to irritation and inflammation. Whenever starting a new physical activity, gradually increase how much you do each session. Light stretching before and after is helpful. Right now, rest, stretching, poss. antiinflammatories and possibly ice may help. Dr L

Can be...: Shoes are too small, neuroma, tarsal tunnel, radiculopathy from back. Possible systemic problem like diabetes, nutrional deficiency. I would rule them out almost in the order i listed the problems.

Doctor can evaluate: Numbness can mean different things to people. Usually, numbness is the sensation one gets when a nerve is compressed or blood circulation is decreased. A primary care or sports medicine doctor can evaluate the problem. Maybe there is some spasm in the vessels during exercise, decreasing blood supply to the feet or toes; or nerve compression in the feet from swelling or from movement of the bones.
