my husband has an ingrown toenail it's so bad that its dark purple from the corner of his toe right down his toe it's swollen and oozing puss. he doesn't want to see a doctor but should i force him to see one?

"Oozing pus,": Oozing pus is a sign (along with swelling, warmth, discoloration) highly suggest an infectious process and warrants being seen by a doctor ASAP. An infection needs attention! This could be something that can spread, not just locally, but throughout the body. Force? Not sure what that means, but this is not something to wait GET TO A DOC-

R/O CELLULITIS: Cellulitis is a superficial skin infection that can be caused after an abrasion or rupture of a boil . Keep the area clean and apply topical antibiotics. Seek prompt evaluation for potential need of oral antibiotics/X-ray /labs. F/U with your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen, oral antibiotics may be needed.DIABETICS NEED PROMPT EVALUATION AND TREATMENT WITH ANTIBIOTICS SOONER

friend on stafcure lz for 4 days now for wound on toe.has diabetes too.the oozing stopped & skin hard but a lil black. does it mean its healing.help.

When someone: has diabetes they should not play games with any wounds particularly ones with a history of oozing. Since, we don't see the wound the advice is to follow up with a podiatrist or vascular doctor since the wound is on a toe.

Sounds like you: have athletes foot. This is a fungal infection of the skin of the foot. Buy some over the counter anti fungal cream (athletes foot cream) and apply as directed.

Toe nail injury: Would go to ER/ urgent or follow up with podiatrist . Nails  take a long time to heal, months. but you need to follow up today to  prevent total loss and or infection.

Infection: Was the nail edge just cut out, or was it also cauterized to prevent regrowth? The latter can be red and drain for several weeks. The alternative is infection. Either way, the best course is to contact the doctor that treated it initially, have it evaluated and let that doctor decide whether antibiotics are appropriate.

Have it checked...: Well everything up to the point where the ankle is very swollen could be consistent with smashing of a big toe. The ankle swelling could be a problem, especially if it has just started. It might be best to have it examined to see if there is the possibility of an infection in the making. Failure to treat an impending infection now could be a boat load of trouble very near in the future.

Need MoreInformation: both history &amp; physical appearance/exam over time. If infection deep enough &amp; soaking plus topical antibiotic not reaching or working well enough, then best change approach and may need systemic antibiotics to get to infection from inside out, not just outside in. The topical antibiotic should be covered with bandaid, after applied to keep it on the wound &amp; allow absorption, despite would weeping.

See a surgeon: You are describing a bacterial infection under the nail.  It needs to be treated by antibiotics and by drainage.  A hole must be made through the nail to allow drainage, followed by soaks.  Make an appointment for today.
