Everyone should!: I'm ER Dr, many people die despite best efforts in ER. Law requires us to ask family about donation, but often they don't know or can't decide unless help on driver's license listing "organ donor." If was automatic, COUNTLESS lives could be saved / prolonged / improved using donated organs after "1st owner" no longer needs them.

Unclear Q: If you mean allowing your or loved one's tissues to be used, it is a way for person to "live on," save a life (or some estimates up to 14 if "everything" donated &amp; used), find a + in a loss...There is no real downside other than few religious concerns regarding being "intact"--but not common. Often more fear / overwhelming at time need answer, so should be discussed in advance.

Mostly justified: There are hundreds of thousands of tissue transplants of various types performed throughout the globe.  There is an expense to collecting and properly handling these tissues and it is reasonable to have the recipient cover that cost.  There is considerable ethical underpinnings about money for a donor, so this part of the debate is still open.

Healthy individuals: Healthy individual with no prior history of cancer are the best candidates. Depending on the tissue/ organ being donated cancer restriction may not apply.

Accepted Answer

Depends on type: For donation after death the pro is helping someone else live longer and a have a better quality of life.  There are no cons that i can see.  For living donation the pros are the same but the cons exist.  Pain, potential surgical complications, potential for death are real issues you may face.

Accepted Answer

No: The organs don't always work.  Sometimes when they do work the patient's other medical conditions get worse and they die.  Sometimes a problem with the organ (such as an infection or blood type issue) can come up after the transplant and cause major problems.

Dire need of organs: Unfortunately many patients with end-stage organ diseases are in need of organ transplants but the availability of transplantable organs does not meet the need.  In the U.S., an average of 18 patients die while waiting for an organ.  Registering for organ donation gives these patients with end-stage organ diseases a new lease on life after the registered donor dies.

No: Paying for organ donation is illegal in th U.S. And in most other countries.  There is no market but there is a need.

Accepted Answer

Just say no. : Tell your health provider no. No details need be provided to anyone else except that you are not an acceptable donor for the potential recipient.  Period!
