It varies a lot: There is good treatment for stage 4 colon Cancer. Most people live for 2-3 years when they take chemotherapy. If the liver tumor is small it can even be removed with surgery. Tell us about the dates of your diagnosis and what type of chemotherapy you have used and for how long? Then we can give you a better estimate of expected survival.

Even this stage: of colon cancer has had tremendous advances with advanced means of chemotherapy!  I would not accept the answer to your question from any other than an ONCOLOGIST who is familiar with the case!

It is possible: Several factors regarding colon cancer liver metastasis predict long term survival. Where the mets present when the original tumor was discovered? How many mets are present? Is the CEA level over 200? How large are the liver mets? How many lymph nodes were positive from the colon specimen? Can all of the liver lesions be removed or ablated? Are there metastasis present elsewhere ie: the lungs.

Not too long: Up to 6 months, but can be up to 12-18 months.

Hmmmm: You know, the terms "stage iv" and "cure" are not usually put in the same sentence by oncologists because in theory, most stage IV cancers are incurable. That said, I have seen a handful of patients who had a limited number of metastases to the liver or lung and are in remission years later after aggressive surgery and chemo. Don't lose hope. Yes: Sounds like lung mets
Be sure to inform his oncologist and get a Chest X-ray

why is secondary liver cancer from the colon cancer so hard to treat?

Accepted Answer

Depends: It very much depends on the cell type of the cancer, the size of the liver tumors, the number of liver tumors, and where the tumors are located in the liver. Sometimes surgery can be used if the tumors are not too big or too numerous, and not located in a vital area of the liver. Tumors that spread may have more aggressive cells and not respond to chemotherapy as well too.

dr., i like to know the time frame for my mom, 84, primary liver cancer, dr. set up hospice for her, how much time does she have left in an average.

Hard to say.: Need to take a few things into consideration…  what is her underlying health status?  What is the total tumor burden?  How much liver function is remaining?   Has she had any complications to date?  Able to eat? "hospice" means less than 6 months.  If she has been losing a good deal of weight i would bet she has much less than that.

Not aware it is used: Of all the treatments for stage 4 colon cancer, i'm not aware of the use of radioactive beads; perhaps it is an experimental treatment which would not yet be available to the public, unless one is in the study.  The liver is the most common organ for colon ca to metastasize, but could go to other areas of the body.

Colon cancer: yes very common. That is the reason we do colon screening to get the small cancers out before they spread.  Trust everyone gets this done as recommended in your health care system to prevent this preventable tragedy.
