Several possibile: You may have referred pain from you lower back that progressed and the acupuncture was coincidental.  It is unusually of acupuncture to make it worse unless they did it wrong.  I advise you to seek medical evaluation.

: Problem could be from the lumbosacral spines, right hip or the right knee by itself. You need to be examined for the correct diagnosis and treatment.

can xray tec tell if knee pain is from muscles near it or if there is a sprain?fell on stairs, pain is on l side of kneecap- muscle inside of leg.

No : No xrays show bone, but not muscles or other soft tissues.  MRI shows soft tissues.

i have knee pain. i have muscle atrophy in my left leg from a ankle injury. and its my right knee it aches when i drive or workout any ideas?

Compensation : Your symptoms are typical of compensation pain. Your right lower extremity is taking on most of the work, as your left side is unable to. 
Recommend therapy to strengthen the left side, and a clinical evaluation to determine why your right knee hurts. You may need an XRay or an MRI of your right knee. 
Please get an orthopedic consult ASAP.

Strain: Muscle or ligament strain or overuse is likely. Knee tendonitis is another possibility. Perhaps inappropriate footwear or poor walking technique were causes. Resting, alternating cold and warm applications and taking anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or naproxen for several days should help. If symptoms persist or worsen see your physician or an orthopedic specialist for evaluation.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor. In the mean time you may take an over the counter pain medication like acetaminophen.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

can sleeping position cause a tight quad muscle? i see a chiropractor regularly for neck issues - he adjusts the whole body - and he works on my it band as it is very tight on the same leg and it causes me knee pain

Get a 2nd opinion: Maybe a different approach to your pain may be warranted if your current treatment plan is ineffective.   I would seek care from a physical therapist for at least the knee pain.

Arthritis: better see your doctor for assessment, you may need a rheumatologist input, meanwhile, use an NSAID, if not contraindicated, read the labels carefully, good luck

Too many to list: You can do a websearch for all the muscles around the knee and the ligaments of the knee.  All can cause knee pain.  You can also have a meniscus tear.  You can have cartilage and bone erosions. 

You can have a joint effusion.

See a doctor to have your knee examined.

Muscle strain: Yes, especially if the muscle crosses the knee joint--quads, hams, etc.
