Potassium: should be low in urine,as tthe body tries to conserve potassium. I think,if not your thyroid,you have a lymph node or abscess in your neck that needs immediate evaluation with US or CT scan. See ENT Dr.

Its gerd: Gerd often causes a vague tightness in the throat area that can't be localized,

Consider trying some acid suppressing medication to see if your symptoms resolve.

Yes: Depending on the location on the gland and the size, they can press on the muscles of the throat or the esophagus itself.

Less likely: More likely a throat infection, and less your thyroid.  If it gets better and you do not see or feel a bulge in your neck/thyroid, it was probably an infection.  If it persisits, you could always be checked by a dr. And a simple thyroid test would let you know.

Rarely: A thyroid issue is possible but less likely. If it bothers you, have an ENT doctor take a look.

i am a graves patient. have done well on low-dose methimazole until recently. am now hyperthyroid again. what could be the cause? also, can enlarges thyroid cause problems swallowing and on/off mild hoarseness? or is there likely a nodule?

: Usually the effective dose of methimazole  stays stable for prolonged periods. It's possible that your TSH receptor antibodies have slowly edged upward and an increase in methimazole dosage is needed. Has your thyroid increased in size? It can impact swallowing &amp; cause hoarseness when large.  A thyroidologist or endocrinologist is best to manage Graves disease&amp; advise you.

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a doctor. Start with your primary care provider for an initial assessment and to ascertain if you need to see a specialist.

i have been treated for graves' disease in the past and now my thyroid hurts when i swallow?

Indeed...: Sometimes after radioactive iodine treatment the thyroid gland goes though a period of inflammation, which is not dangerous, just bothersome.
Talk to your Dr. and see if he would prescribe a low dose of prednisone for just a week, or even a low dose of Indocin (indomethacin) for a couple weeks.
Please do not worry, this is not serious
