Usual course: Typically people have some stiffness and soreness in the neck for the first week or two.  Sometimes swallowing can be difficult (especially liquids) and the voice can be hoarse for the first month (about 10% of people).  Energy levels can fluctuate because of the surgery, as well as, thyroid hormone levels changing.  Other specific issues can be addressed by your surgeon.

Radioactive iodine: For some thyroid disorders, such as autoimmune hyperthyroid or graves disease, iodine tagged with radiation is used to selectively decrease the thyroid function. Which can cure the problem, or improve the surgery safety and results.

How long ago?: Depends. One needs to consider many factors including possible aspiration of stomach contact when under anesthesia.

Thyroid incision: The incision will heal fairly quickly. Within a couple weeks it should be minimally pink/red, nontender and free of any sutures or closure material. It will be susceptible to effects from sun exposure for up to a year. I generally recommend at least 50spf sunscreen on any head and neck incision with exposure for at least 1 year.

Why?: There are a number of centers near florida that do endoscopic thyroid surgery, like tulane la, atlanta ga.  The only real advantage to this type of thyroid surgery is that you would have a smaller scar in the neck or no scar if done through the axilla (arm pit).  However, the procedure usually takes more time, therefore more anesthesia.  There is no evidence that complications are less frequent.

There will be: a NORMAL "thickening" at the site of your surgery for several months after the procedure! In addition any fatigue you had prior to the surgery I assume will respond to thyroid replacement (if indicated) or a little "tincture of time"!

Within a few days?: you should ask the surgeon about this, but it all depends on what surgery is being done on your thyroid - if it is a deep procedure, say a subtotal thyroid extort, it could take up to a week for full recovery, while simple biopsies take a day to do and you are back at work the next day. Ask your surgeon
