Toenails: Your medical history is complicated. The problem with your toenails has many possible causes have them evaluated by a dermatologist. It could be due to an infectious (bacterial or fungal) , or immunologic, or physical etiology. The burning may or may not be related to the cracking of your nails.

Vertical Nail Ridges: Yes, vertical nail ridges can be due to low thyroid function.

have brittle hair with hair loss, cold all the time, weak nails and a swelling in the neck. family history of thyroid problems. had thyroid stimulating hormone test several times and never tested higher than 1.10. should i be worried?

: Yes and find out the cause. Does not appear to be low thyroid but need other test results. Can have low thyroid due to pituitary not  making enough TSH. Discuss.

: The risk of HIV was nil, your symptoms do not suggest HIV, and your negative test result is conclusive. You don't have HIV. See a doctor if your symptoms continue. Good luck.

No: Patients with type 1 diabetes have about a 30% chance of also getting autoimmune thyroid disease. However, autoimmune thyroid disease by itself is very common among the general population. It does not raise your risk as much in reverse in terms of also getting type 1 diabetes.

i have an injured fingernail, and its all purple and black underneath. it seems like its going to come off soon, but there is now a hole near the base of the fingernail. it doesnt reach the nail bed, just reaches all the dead skin. what do i do?

: The hole that you are seeing might just be the new nail starting to grow underneath.If you have no pain, you should just leave the nail alone. The new nail will grow underneath starting from the base and when there is enough new nail, the old will come off. Keep a bandage over it so it doesn't get caught on something and get pulled off too soon. If you're in pain, please see your doctor or the ER.

i had on acrylic nails and i broke my nail bed in half (injury), right now my nail bed is very short and i was wondering if its gonna grow back to normal. i have a little fungus. ive used tea tree oil. so will that go away too? or is this permanent?

: A little fungus is not a useful statement. If there is fungal infection of the exposed nail bed you should try an over the counter antifungal cream. If that does not resolve the issue in a week or so, it would be prudent to see a doctor.

Nail itching: Look for any lesions or inflammation that may explain your discomfort. Otherwise, it's not common to have itching in the nailbed.

Onychomadesis: Your daughter most likely had what is called onychomadesis. Most likely causes include:

drug sensitivity
febrile illness
hand, foot and mouth disease
poor nutrition
trauma.

Accepted Answer

: There is no need to worry about thickening of the nail bed since that will have no serious consequences. Trauma can cause this.
