Kelp and thyroid: There is a lot of misinformation about the benefits of using iodine containing supplements and the thyroid. Though iodine is important in the creation of thyroid hormone iodine deficiency in the US is rare. I have seen more thyroid problems in patients taking kelp because of the high iodine content. In some people  too much iodine can cause either over active or under active thyroid problems

Dosing : Dosing for most herbals/ supplements is not well standardized, thus it may not be as safe as taking a medication as these are regulated by the fda and dosing is standardized.

OfCourse NotStandand: Checking TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), from the hypothalamus, like thousands of other possible tests from a blood sample, is not a "standard" blood test. At any one time, typically only a few things are tested due to costs ; whatever the person marking what tests are requested is choosing to look for versus not look for. Thyroid hormone does not have benefit for people who are not hypothyroid.

Don't take: Anything that makes you sick. Kelp will not help your thyroid. You should not be iodine deficient if you live in the United States. Don't get your medical information from friends, tv or internet scams.

Evaluate: This is a common complaint and it is frequently not due to a thyroid problem. I recommend you see a good physician for a work up to rule out reversible causes for the weight gain before taking over the counter meds that you may not need. There are many other causes for weight gain beside a thyroid problem. Sleep apnea is a common culprit.

Save your $$: Hi. Kelp supplements will do NOTHING for your thyroid that good old (cheap) iodized salt won't do. Save your money, and don't make the snake oil salesmen rich!

Weight gain: If your thyroid blood work is normal, then you likely dont have thyroid problems.Weight gain is a simple equation calories ingested &gt; calories burned.Kelp is extremely nutritious with very few calories. For continued weight loss, find ways to increase your metabolism.Exercise, high protein, low fat, low carb diet,and muscle building are helpful. Look at "the high metabolism diet". Hope that helps.

If your thyroid: Blood tests are normal then your thyroid is functioning normally, you should not take thyroid medication to loose weight if you thyroid is normal. Too high thyroid is dangerous. I suggest balanced diet, moderate portions and 1/2-1 hour of exercise a day. Water exercise or swimming can be gentle on your joints.
