Change thyroid med: Hypothyroidism, underactive thyroid, is always treated the same way. Find a thyroid supplement that is well tolerated and find the right dose (may take months) that brings you into a euthyroid (normal) state, then check levels every 6-12 months, to make sure, new dose is not needed. If treated properly, there are no side effects from the supplement; there are many brands (synthetic and natural).

can swollen thyroids be a side effect to starting birth control?

Not likely : Birth control pills have many possible side effects, but swollen thyroid is not a known side effect of this class of medication. They do have a potential to change some lab values because they can cause some increase of binding-proteins to thyroid hormones, but no change of functions. So, if you have a swollen thyroid, consult doc for an evaluation. Good luck.

Not sure: What you are asking here.  If you have your thyroid removed, you almost always need to take thyroid replacement with levothyroxine or some other similar drug.  If enough of your thyroid is left behind after the surgery, you might not have to take medication however.

am  having total throidoctomy due to cancer and i won't be taking any hormone to replace my thyroid hormone for 6 weeks what side effect i will have ?

Hypothyroidism: There is no need to stop the synthroid (thyroxine) prior to surgery. You need to stop it prior to radioactive iodine. You will become hypothyroid: cold, fatigued, constipated, etc. There are ways to lessen this. You can switch to fast acting Cytomel for 4 of 6 weeks, and then stop the cytomel.  Thyrogen can be used. The management of thyroid ca is complex, and should be directed by an endocrinologist.

had total thyroidectomy due to thyroid cancer 7 weeks ago; voice get tired after talking for awhile. normal side effect and when will it get better?

Accepted Answer

Normal: The recurrent laryngeal nerve, which controls your vocal cords, travels directly under the thyroid and easily becomes damaged during the surgery.  Being intubated and having your neck muscles manipulated during the surgery also contribute to voice problems.  It should get better within 3-4 months.

radiology question. had a ct scan of the neck with contrast and next day felt a definite soreness in the area where the thyroid gland is. is this a normal side effect or something to be concerned about?

Immediate medical: Immediate medical consult please.  Your primary care physician will evaluate to figure out what medication caused fluid retention.  And the following steps will be either lower the dose or discontinue the med for a period of time, or switch to other medication.

does ativan decrease serotonin and tsh like klonopin does? i know hallucinations are listed as side effect for ativan (dopamine?) reason why i ask is because i have hyper-thyroid like symptoms that klonopin was helping with but switched to ativan?

: Neither ativan nor klonopin impact serotonin or TSH. Rather they work at the GABA receptor in the brain to reduce anxiety, muscle tension, and induce sedation. The "Hyperthyroid symptoms" that you mention may or may not be your thyroid. Getting bloodwork (TSH, Free T4) is needed to identify any thyroid disorder.

Yes: Thyroid disease, such as underactive or overactive thyroid can certainly cause symptoms in either sex at any age. They're easy to diagnose with simple h/p and blood tests.

is short and long time memory loss a side effect of a radical neck disection?

Accepted Answer

No: Memory should not be a problem after a neck dissection.  You should bring this to the attention of your doctor.
